IMPORT OF SENSITIVE ITEMS DURING APRIL-MAY 2007

  The total import of sensitive items for the period April-May 07 has been Rs.2606 crores as compared to Rs.2828 crores during the corresponding period last year thereby showing a decrease of 7.9%. The gross import of all commodities during same period of current year was Rs.148054 crores as compared to Rs.121305 crores during the same period of last year. Thus import of sensitive items constitute 2.3% and 1.8% of the gross imports during last year and current year respectively.   

          Imports of edible oil, fruits & vegetables (including nuts), cotton & silk, products of SSI, spices, marble & Granite and milk & milk products have shown a decline at broad group level during the period. Imports of items viz. automobiles, rubber and Alcoholic beverages have shown increase during the period under reference. 

In the edible oil segment, the import has decreased from Rs.1601 crores last year to Rs.1381 crores for the corresponding period of this year. The import of both crude oil as well as refined oil have gone down by 13.6% and 16.4% respectively.  The fall in edible oil import is mainly due to significant decrease in import of Soya-bean oil and its fractions (Crude), which has gone down by 63%.  

Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, China P RP, Thailand, Germany, Japan, Cote D’ Ivoire, Australia, United Kingdom etc. have gone up while those from Argentina, United States of America, Malaysia, Benin, Egypt A RP, Sri Lanka DSR, Brazil, Vietnam Soc Republic etc. have shown a decrease.
