BIMSTEC TRADE NEGOTIATING COMMITTEE MEETING HELD
Date : 12 Jun 2009
Location : New Delhi
The 18th meeting of the BIMSTEC Trade Negotiating Committee (TNC) was held in Phuket, Thailand, from the 2nd to 4th June, 2009. All the BIMSTEC member countries participated in the meeting.
The primary aim of this meeting was to bring the discussions on the text of the Agreement on Trade in Goods to a closure and expedite the way towards an early implementation of the BIMSTEC Free Trade Agreement. The meeting was a success to the extent that all contentious issues in the FTA text were resolved to the mutual satisfaction of all participants. The text of the Rules of Origin & Operational Certification Procedure as well as the text of the Agreement on Cooperation and Mutual Assistance in Customs Matters was also agreed upon. With agreement having been reached on the three texts, member countries would now be working on the tariff liberalization schedules, discussions on which would take place in the next meeting of the TNC sometime in July this year.
