Date : 19 Apr 2001
Location : New Delhi:
India's exports are likely to have clocked a growth rate of 20 % in dollar terms during the last financial year 2000-2001, thereby surpassing the target of 18 % set for the year 2000-2001. This was indicated by Shri Murasoli Maran, Minister of Commerce and Industry, at the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) and Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) here today. The MOU was signed in the presence of Shri Maran by Smt. Rathi Vinay Jha, Chairperson and Managing Director of ITPO and Shri Tarun Das, Director General of CII, on behalf of their respective organisations. Shri Arun Bharat Ram, President of CII; Shri Rahul Bajaj; Shri Subodh Bhargava and Shri K. T. Chacko, Executive Director, ITPO, were among those present. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Maran referred to the Market Access Initiative announced by him in this year's EXIM Policy and underlined that the active participation by the trade and industry was an essential pre-requisite for making the scheme a success. The scheme, which has been approved by the Planning Commission, aims at assisting the industry with market research, market intelligence etc as well as direct market promotion activities.
The MOU recognises the synergy in the objectives of ITPO and apex bodies such as CII which are engaged in the promotion and enhancement of India's trade. It aims at synchronising the efforts of the two trade promotional bodies by using their expertise and infrastructure by providing for mutual cooperation in the areas of knowledge-based services, market studies, organising seminars and workshops, mobilising participation for trade fairs, organising presentation meetings, popularising the new regional trade promotion centres and events in the various states of India.
