RECORD GROWTH IN EXPORTS
INDIA’S FOREIGN TRADE DATA: APRIL- FEBRUARY 2003-2004

India’s exports during February, 2004 are valued at US $ 5597.28 million which is 34.87% higher than the level of US $ 4150.19 million during February, 2003. This is over and above the 17.40% export growth in February, 2003 over February, 2002. In rupee terms, the exports in February, 2004 were Rs. 25339.05 crores, which is 27.91% higher than the value of exports during February, 2003.
India’s exports during April-February, 2003-2004 are valued at US $ 53072.06 million which is 14.75% higher than the level of US $ 46250.75 million during April-February, 2002-2003. This is over and above 17.18% export growth in April-February, 2002-03 over the corresponding previous period. In rupee terms, the exports were Rs.244037.69 crores, during April- February, 2003-2004 which is 8.89% higher than the value of exports during April- February, 2002-2003.
India’s imports during April-February, 2003-2004 are valued at US $ 68595.71 million representing an increase of 26.33% over the level of imports valued at US $ 54298.06 million in April- February, 2002-2003.In Rupee terms, the imports have increased to Rs. 316031.55 crores from Rs. 263071.01 crores showing a growth of 20.13% during the period.
Oil imports during April-February, 2003-2004 are valued at US $ 18771.01 million which is 17.80% higher than oil imports valued at US $ 15935.04 million in the corresponding period last year. Non-oil imports during April- February, 2003-2004 are estimated at US $ 49824.70million which is 29.88% higher than the level of such imports valued at US $ 38363.02 million in April- February, 2002-2003.
India’s imports during February,2004 are valued at US $ 6693.16 million representing an increase of 44.53 % over the level of imports valued at US $ 4630.92 million in February, 2003. In Rupee terms the imports increased by 39.62% during February, 2004.
The trade deficit for April- February, 2003-2004 is estimated at US $ 15523.65 million which is higher than the deficit at US $ 8047.31 million during April- February, 2002-2003.
With the introduction of EDI System and quickening of the process of data collection, DGCI&S, Kolkata, has been able to send the data early and the Department Of Commerce has been able to release the data ahead of schedule. In the coming months, this process will be further quickened and the data is likely to be released even earlier.
