GOVT COMMITTED TO MANUFACTURING REVIVAL AND EMPLOYMENT GENERATION: ANAND SHARMA

In a presentation made by the Confederation of Indian Industry before Shri Anand Sharma, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, here today, the members touched upon the areas like the present economic and exports scenario and the ways to push forward, present state of play of the World Trade Organisation, need to attract foreign direct investments, increasing investments particularly in the physical infrastructure, manufacturing and services sector etc. Interacting with the industrialists gathered during the presentation, the Minister informed that he will shortly discuss with the Industry Ministers of the State Governments as regards the problems being faced by the manufacturing sector and take necessary steps to mitigate the same. He further assured that the Government would re-energize the Inter-State Trade Council for wider consultation on important trade related matters. The Meeting was attended by Dr. Rahul Khullar, Commerce Secretary; Shri Ajay Shanker, Secretary (DIPP); and senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry apart from industrialists and trade bodies. 

The Minister underlined that the government is committed to the revival of manufacturing sector and promotion of employment generation. Shri Sharma said: “We need to encourage the manufacturing sector and industrial activities for providing more employment in the country”, and added that Government and industry should make joint efforts for skill-development for employment generation. Several industrialists raised the problem of not having single-window clearance system especially in the manufacturing sector. The Minister explained that the problems will be redressed soon and the government will try to have simplified producers for resolving the grievances in this regard. 

During the discussions, Shri Sharma reassured the government’s commitments to industry and exports as regards stakeholders concerns for promoting the exports and particularly encouraging the manufacturing sector. He informed that the previous stimulus packages have helped in the past and the efforts will continue.  

As regards the multilateral trade issues, Shri Sharma said that India is committed for the early resumption of the WTO Doha round negotiations, as there is a need to have a rule-based multilateral global trading system and the government will continue to take inputs from various stakeholders in the country.
