MEETING OF INDO-NEPAL GOVERNMENTALCOMMITTEE
INDO-NEPAL TRADE TREATY

A meeting of the India-Nepal Inter-Governmental Committee on Trade, Transit and Cooperation to Control Unauthorised Trade was held at New Delhi on August 15-18, 2002. The following issues relating to bilateral trade were discussed in the meting: Bilateral agreement to promote and protect investments; Bilateral cooperation to evolve common standards and measurements to promote bilateral trade; Infrastructural improvement on the identified Land Customs Stations on the border including operationalisation of Inland Clearance Depot (ICD), Birgunj, Nepal and rehabilitation of Motor vehicular Traffic; Import of Indian vehicles into Nepal under emission norms; Improvement in the facilities for import of Nepalese food articles and other agricultural products including food testing and quarantine testing facilities; Relaxation in anti-dumping duty and special additional duty on some of the Nepalese articles exported to India; and Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) on some of the Nepalese products to protect Indian industries.
The Indian side also raised the issue of the problems faced by the Indian Joint Venture Companies in Nepal on account of amendments in the Nepalese Labour Law. The Nepalese side appreciated the concern of the Indian side and agreed to take appropriate action.
Regarding the provisions of the India-Nepal Treaty of Trade, these were reviewed in detail in March 2002 with a view to promoting bilateral trade and to address the problems of the industries on both sides.
